Gender Equality Is a Community Responsibility

Businesses, customers and communities all have a role in expanding women’s economic participation

HAMRA’s approach: awareness and community engagement, market visibility and access, training and capacity building, and partnerships for greater impact.

Awareness is part of creating change

Gender equality is often discussed through policies, targets and statistics. Those tools are important, but sustainable progress also depends on everyday attitudes, opportunities and practices within communities.

Businesses can contribute to this process.

HAMRA believes companies have a role not only in strengthening equality within their own workplaces but also in using their platforms, partnerships and community engagement to increase awareness and create practical opportunities for participation.

What does gender equality in economic participation mean?

Gender equality does not mean guaranteeing outcomes regardless of qualifications or business requirements.

It means working toward an environment in which women and men can access opportunities fairly and where unnecessary barriers do not prevent people from participating because of gender.

For women entrepreneurs, this can include fair access to information, digital tools, business-development opportunities, customers, networks and supplier opportunities.

It also means treating women entrepreneurs as economic actors with businesses, products, services, skills and ambitions—not simply as beneficiaries.

What can businesses do?

Companies can contribute in practical ways.

They can examine whether their recruitment, procurement and partnership practices unintentionally exclude women. They can communicate opportunities through channels women can access. They can make registration and onboarding processes understandable and accessible. They can support skills development and create opportunities for women entrepreneurs to connect with customers and networks.

Companies can also use their public communication channels to highlight women’s economic participation and encourage broader recognition of women as entrepreneurs, professionals and business partners.

What can communities and customers do?

Customers also influence market opportunities.

Discovering local women-owned businesses, learning about their products and services, and making purchasing decisions based on quality and need can contribute to a more diverse local marketplace.

Communities can support women’s economic participation by recognizing entrepreneurship as meaningful economic activity and by encouraging safe, respectful environments in which women can develop their businesses and professional skills.

HAMRA’s contribution

As a women-led Afghan company, HAMRA seeks to contribute through both its organizational practices and its digital platform.

HAMRA’s Women-Led Businesses programme provides public information and participation pathways and supports eligible women-owned and women-led businesses in developing a digital presence.

HAMRA also recognizes the importance of capacity building, peer learning, market visibility, partnerships and responsible safeguarding in supporting meaningful participation.

Through its public website, digital communications and programme activities, HAMRA can also contribute to wider awareness of women’s economic participation and the value women entrepreneurs bring to their communities.
